工业废水是在工矿生产活动中产生的废水。工业废水可分为生产污水与生产废水。生产污水是指在生产过程中形成、并被生产原料、半成品或成品等原料所污染，也包括热污染（指生产过程中产生的、水温超过60℃的水）；生产废水是指在生产过程中形成，但未直接参与生产工艺、未被生产原料、半成品或成品等原料所污染或只是温度少有上升的水。生产污水需要进行净化处理；生产废水不需要净化处理或仅需做简单的处理，如冷却处理。

案例：

某钢厂形成600万吨/年生产规模时，平均排水量将达到4000m³/h。废水处理工程设计平均日处理能力9.6万米³，夏季大日处理能力10.8万米³,其中70%作为工业补水回到厂区管网，其余达标后排放。

  该废水处理回用工程于2010年4月开工建设，20012年1月主体结构完工，2012年5月试运行，2012年8月交付生产。工程占地29500㎡，新建建、构筑物占地8041㎡，绿化覆盖率32%，静态投资为8643万元。

厂区全部废水经处理后达到排放标准，其中回用水经软化、过滤、消毒等深度处理后，达到生产用水标准。

本工程进水为典型的钢铁工业废水，有机污染物含量不高，可生化性差，不适宜采用生化方法降解。本项目主要采用物理化学法。作为工业补水，在回用水深度处理中增加去除暂时硬度、总碱度软化、过滤、消毒等工艺。
