釉下呈现红色花纹的瓷器。即“釉下彩”。其制作程序是以氧化铜红料在素胎上绘纹饰，然后敷施透明釉，再在1350℃的还原气氛中烧成，与青花瓷制作工序大致相同,是元代制瓷中心景德镇窑在青花瓷工艺基础上,受唐代长沙窑和宋代钧窑运用铜红釉作红斑装饰影响而创造的新品种。它的胎体洁白、细腻、坚硬，足部处理较光滑，并有硬线条的削痕棱角，砂底露胎常现火红色晕，釉面肥腴、浑浊呈青白色。装饰手法有绘画、渲染、勾勒、刻划、凸贴、雕塑等。绘画线条有粗、细之分，或只是勾勒纹饰的轮廓；渲染是在刻划纹饰轮廓线外涂染，成为釉里红地章留白纹饰，或是在刻划线内施红；凸贴是将捏塑件附加于器身，也有整体雕塑的人物、楼阁等，具有很高的艺术水平。纹饰题材和内容不及同时的青花瓷那样丰富。常见纹饰有缠枝莲、折枝花、牡丹、云龙、凤凰、仙鹤、芦雁、朱雀、玄武、玉兔、蕉叶、竹石、莲瓣、回纹、锦纹、线纹、忍冬纹与红斑等
