目前藏家对汉代玉璧情有钟，从造型上来说 尚没有那种分类法能够将见于著录的玉璧标本囊括殆尽。如果仅依“形制”区别或仅据“纹饰”不同的单一标准对汉代玉璧分类，则会带来不少标本分类归属模糊、或有些标本分类过于粗约等问题。本文采取“形制”与“纹饰”特征兼顾的方式，仅对汉代玉璧作大致分类，严谨说来，亦算不上是一种十分的分类法。

从纹饰上来说，汉代玉璧的纹饰，多直接从春秋同类器中因袭、衍变而出，动物图案种类以龙纹、螭纹、蛇纹、凤纹及其组合为主，主题纹饰区内亦流行加饰网格纹、绞丝弦纹、羽状纹、花叶纹、水滴纹等细密纹的做法。尤其春秋之际流行的双首龙纹图式，汉代玉璧形构组图仍大量使用，只是龙或其他神异动物的整体形构在组图中进一步被肢解、离散、抽象、简化、变形，向着装饰性的几何图案化方向发展。

汉代玉璧：璧，圆形扁平，中有圆孔的玉器，“以苍璧礼天。”有三种类型：璧、环、援。按'尔雅'的解释：“肉'玉体部分'倍好'圆孔'谓之璧，好倍肉谓之瑷，肉好若一谓之环。”肉、好的倍、一是指肉、好的半径还是直径的长度，有争议，但以古玉璧的实物来看，肉、好并无的比例。我们一般称小孔者为璧，大孔者为环。其实玉璧也用作佩饰和陪葬，其大小、形状、花纹差别甚大。

汉代出廓壁拍得1456万元，创玉璧拍卖价格新高。从近两年玉器拍卖市场来看，玉器的工艺、质地已经成为收藏玉器的标准。
